Murdaugh was arrested on September 16, in connection to an insurance fraud scheme that court documents say involved him arranging for his own killing so his surviving son could collect the life insurance payout.He faces charges of insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and filing a false police report, according to a statement from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

The case will be prosecuted by the state Attorney General’s office.Murdaugh also admitted to authorities on September 13 that he had orchestrated and conspired with a man to kill him as part of the plan.The person was identified by police as Curtis Edward Smith, a former client of Murdaugh, according to an affidavit to support charges against Smith.

Smith is being held on bond for $55,000 and will need to obtain an attorney in 15 days or his bond will be revoked.Murdaugh, however, is being held on a $20,000 and must surrender his passport to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and sign a waiver of extradition.

In a statement on September 6 that did not address the shooting, Murdaugh said: “The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life.”I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret.
