Alysa Liu Facts and Career

Liu began skating at the age of five, when her father, an admirer of Michelle Kwan, took her to the Oakland Ice Center.

Laura Lipetsky, a former figure skater who skated under Frank Carroll, was her childhood coach, and she quickly advanced to private lessons.

In 2015, Liu competed in her first skating competition as a teen, at the Central Pacific Regionals, where she placed seventh.

At the 2016 U.S. Championships, she became the youngest female skater to win the gold medal in the intermediate division.

She placed first in the short programme with two triple Salchows, the first of which she combined with a double toe loop for a “program-high 7.0 points.”In August of 2018, Liu participated as a novice at the Asian Open Trophy in Bangkok, Thailand.

She won gold by more than 10 points over Sara Honda of Japan, who won silver. She became the youngest skater in history to perform a clean triple Axel in competition, joining Tonya Harding, Kimmie Meisner, and Mirai Nagasu as the fourth American female skater to accomplish this feat.

On April 9, 2022, Liu announced her retirement from figure skating on Instagram, indicating that she was satisfied with her career, had accomplished her goals, and was “moving on with her life.” Sarah Hughes, who won gold in 2002, was the last American female singles skater not to compete in a second Olympics.
