Andy Ruiz Jr began his amateur boxing career in Mexico under the tutelage of Cuban trainer Fernando Ferrer, where he amassed a 105-5 win-loss record. At the Mexican National Junior Olympics, he won two gold medals and the Ringside World Championships.

He competed in the Beijing Olympic Games qualification tournaments in 2008 as part of the Mexican squad, but lost in two matches, first to Robert Alfonso and then to Oscar Rivas.He made his professional debut on March 28, 2009, at the age of 19, against Miguel Salvador Ramirez. He won the match via first-round knockout at Plaza de Toros in Tijuana (Baja California, Mexico).

Three months later, he won his second fight by technical knockout over Ross Brantley. In February of the following year, he won a unanimous decision in his third match (against Juan Luis Lopez Alcaraz). Both matches were held in Mexico.Just a month later, in March 2010, he made his U.S. Pro debut and knocked out Luke Vaughn.

His winning streak lasted another 25 matches, until September 2016. He won by knockout over Francisco Diaz, Matthew Greer, Maurenzo Smith, and Kelsey Arnold, and by technical knockout over Josh Gormley, Kenny Lemos, Manuel Quezada, Joe Hanks, Carl Davis, Elijah McCall, Jonte Willis, Ken Frank, Villi Bloomfield, and Miles Kelly.

He defeated Raymond Lopez, Alvaro Morales, Angel Herrera, and Theron Johnson. Homero Fonseca, Siarhei Liakhovich, Joell Godfrey, Raphael Zumbano, and Franklin Lawrence were all elected unanimously. In his bouts against Ray Austin and Tor Hamer, he was declared the victor by RTD.He won the vacant WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title after defeating Joe Hanks in July 2013. He successfully defended his title against Tor Hamer four months later.

He also won the WBC-NABF heavyweight title with his victory in the latter match. He defended both titles by defeating Manuel Quezada and Siarhei Liakhovich in May and December of 2014. He also successfully defended his WBC-NABF heavyweight title by defeating Joell Godfrey in September 2015, Ray Austin in May 2016, and Franklin Lawrence in November 2016. (September 2016).

Andy Ruiz Jr lost his 30th match against Joseph Parker by majority decision in December 2016 after winning his previous 29 matches in a row. He was competing for the WBO World Heavyweight Championship, which was currently vacant. He continued his winning streak in the following fight, defeating Devin Vargas via knockout in March 2018 and later defeating Kevin Johnson via unanimous decision in July 2018.
