Andy Ruiz Jr began his amateur boxing career in Mexico under the tutelage of Cuban trainer Fernando Ferrer, where he amassed a 105-5 win-loss record. At the Mexican National Junior Olympics, he won two gold medals and the Ringside World Championships.
He competed in the Beijing Olympic Games qualification tournaments in 2008 as part of the Mexican squad, but lost in two matches, first to Robert Alfonso and then to Oscar Rivas.He made his professional debut on March 28, 2009, at the age of 19, against Miguel Salvador Ramirez. He won the match via first-round knockout at Plaza de Toros in Tijuana (Baja California, Mexico).
Three months later, he won his second fight by technical knockout over Ross Brantley. In February of the following year, he won a unanimous decision in his third match (against Juan Luis Lopez Alcaraz). Both matches were held in Mexico.Just a month later, in March 2010, he made his U.S. Pro debut and knocked out Luke Vaughn.
His winning streak lasted another 25 matches, until September 2016. He won by knockout over Francisco Diaz, Matthew Greer, Maurenzo Smith, and Kelsey Arnold, and by technical knockout over Josh Gormley, Kenny Lemos, Manuel Quezada, Joe Hanks, Carl Davis, Elijah McCall, Jonte Willis, Ken Frank, Villi Bloomfield, and Miles Kelly.
