- NASA selected Thomas in March 1992, and he reported to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in August 1992.
- He was named a member of the NASA Astronaut Corps in August 1993, after completing a year of training, and qualified for a position as a mission specialist on Space Shuttle flight crews.
- At the Marshall Space Flight Center, he also provided technical support to the Space Shuttle Main Engine project, the Solid Rocket Motor project, and the External Tank project.
- Thomas was designated payload commander for STS-77 in June 1995, and he performed his first space trip on Endeavour in May 1996.
- Thomas was the first Australian-born professional astronaut to enter space, despite the fact that Paul D. Scully-Power had done so as an oceanographer in 1985.
