She won in the women’s 500-meter time trial at the Olympic Games held in Athens in 2004, taking home the gold medal and setting a new world record with a time of 33.952 seconds. Meares had the challenge of breaking a new Olympic record that had been set just minutes earlier by the current holder of the World Record, Yonghua Jiang of China.

In May of 2004, while competing in Melbourne for the Time Trial World Titles, Meares won the title of Women’s World Time Trial Champion and also took home the silver medal in the sprint competition. Additionally took first place in the World Cup Time Trial that was held in Sydney in 2004.

Meares was a heavy favorite to win three gold medals in the World Championships in 2012, which were held in Melbourne, which is the capital city of Meares’ home country of Australia. Meares was awarded the silver medal in the team sprint, an event in which Germany set two world records.
