Anne  Ruston Career

Ruston began working for state Liberal MP Peter Arnold as an electorate officer in 1987. In 1993, she became a tourist policy adviser on the staff of state tourism minister Graham Ingerson, and in 1996, she was named executive officer of the Wine and Tourism Council. Her appointment was contentious, with the state opposition accusing Ingerson of influencing the selection process in her favor.

Ruston was a key figure in the establishment of the National Wine Centre of Australia, first as a project director and subsequently as the organization’s first CEO. Premier John Olsen launched it in 1998 as a center for wine tourism and education, as well as office space for numerous wine industry organizations. Ruston managed the centre’s building phase before announcing her decision not to renew her term three months before it opened in 2001. She and the centre’s chairman, Rick Allert, were called before a parliamentary committee in 2000 to testify about alleged procurement violations.

The center had over 100 employees at the time she left, but was apparently struggling to make ends meet and needed a bailout from the state government. The drop in air traffic following the September 11 attacks, as well as the collapse of Ansett Australia, were blamed for the company’s financial woes. Independent MP Peter Lewis, on the other hand, said that the business plan approved by Ruston and Allert exaggerated expected visitor numbers.

Ruston and her husband bought Ruston’s Roses in Renmark in 2003, a commercial rose-growing farm founded by her uncle David Ruston in 1948.He was the first Australian to lead the World Federation of Rose Societies as president. It was said to have held 50,000 rose bushes of 4,000 types and over 700 species of iris at the time of purchase, spread over 11 hectares (27 acres).

However, because to the Millennium drought, she was forced to put commercial growing on hold for three years, and the gardens were transformed into “mainly a retail-tourist enterprise,” with the installation of a tourism center, function rooms, and a cafe. She was managing director until 2012, when she was appointed to the Senate, following which she remained a co-owner.
