Anthony Albanese Professional Career

Anthony Norman Albanese is an Australian politician who has been the country’s 31st and current Prime Minister since 2022. He has been the Australian Labor Party (ALP) leader since 2019 and the Grayndler member of parliament (MP) since 1996. Albanese previously served as the 15th deputy prime minister in the second Rudd government in 2013; from 2007 to 2013, he held various ministerial positions in the Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard governments.

Albanese was born in Sydney to an Italian father and a single Irish-Australian mother. He attended St Mary’s Cathedral College before going on to study economics at the University of Sydney. He joined the Labor Party as a student and worked as a party official and research officer before entering Parliament. Albanese was elected to the House of Representatives in 1996, winning the Grayndler seat in New South Wales. Simon Crean first appointed him to the shadow cabinet in 2001, and he went on to serve in a variety of roles before becoming Manager of Opposition Business in 2006.

Following Labor’s election victory in 2007, Albanese was appointed Leader of the House, as well as Minister for Regional Development and Local Government and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport. During the subsequent leadership battles between Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard from 2010 to 2013, Albanese publicly chastised both, calling for party unity. Albanese was elected deputy leader of the Labor Party and sworn in as deputy prime minister the following day after supporting Rudd in the final leadership ballot between the two in June 2013, a position he held for less than three months as Labor was defeated in the 2013 election.

Following Rudd’s resignation and retirement from politics, Albanese ran against Bill Shorten in the ensuing leadership election, the first to include party members as well as MPs. Although Albanese won a large majority of the membership, Shorten won the contest by a large margin among Labor MPs; Shorten later appointed Albanese to his Shadow Cabinet. Shorten resigned as leader following Labor’s surprise defeat in the 2019 election, with Albanese becoming the only person nominated in the leadership election to replace him; he was subsequently elected unopposed as leader of the Labor Party, becoming Leader of the Opposition.

Albanese led his party to a decisive victory over Scott Morrison’s Liberal-National Coalition in the 2022 election. He made history by becoming the first Italian-Australian prime minister and the first Australian prime minister with a non-Anglo-Celtic surname. On May 23, 2022, he was sworn in alongside four senior frontbenchers. Albanese’s first acts as Prime Minister included updating Australia’s climate targets in an effort to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as well as supporting a national minimum wage increase.
