Anthony Norman Albanese is an Australian politician who has been the country’s 31st and current Prime Minister since 2022. He has been the Australian Labor Party (ALP) leader since 2019 and the Grayndler member of parliament (MP) since 1996. Albanese previously served as the 15th deputy prime minister in the second Rudd government in 2013; from 2007 to 2013, he held various ministerial positions in the Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard governments.
Albanese was born in Sydney to an Italian father and a single Irish-Australian mother. He attended St Mary’s Cathedral College before going on to study economics at the University of Sydney. He joined the Labor Party as a student and worked as a party official and research officer before entering Parliament.
Albanese was elected to the House of Representatives in 1996, winning the Grayndler seat in New South Wales. Simon Crean first appointed him to the shadow cabinet in 2001, and he went on to serve in a variety of roles before becoming Manager of Opposition Business in 2006.
