Before entering Parliament, Anthony Albanese served as a Labor Party official and research officer. Albanese was elected to the House of Representatives in 1996, gaining the seat of Grayndler in New South Wales.
Simon Crean appointed him to the shadow cabinet in 2001, and he went on to serve in a variety of positions before becoming Manager of Opposition Business in 2006. Following Labor’s electoral victory in 2007, Albanese was named Leader of the House, as well as Minister for Regional Development and Local Government and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport.
During the subsequent leadership battles between Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard from 2010 to 2013, Albanese openly criticized both, calling for party unity.
