Souths went on to reach the preliminary final but were defeated 12-4 by the Sydney Roosters in the grand final. Seibold was named Dally M coach of the year on September 27, 2018.

In November 2018, Seibold became enraged when asked about a potential switch with Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett. “I’ve had a gutful,” he continued. For the past four weeks, I’ve been sitting here feeling like a punching bag. It’s neither acceptable nor fair… He’s (Wayne Bennett) been calling the Souths players, but he claims in his press conference that he hasn’t spoken to anyone. That is complete nonsense… I’m tired of Wayne going on and on.

Brisbane began the 2020 NRL season with two straight victories over North Queensland and Seibold’s former team, South Sydney. Brisbane finished fifth in the first two rounds of the season before being suspended due to an outbreak of COVID-19 in Australia. The Parramatta Eels defeated Brisbane 34-6 when the season resumed on May 28. Brisbane was again on the wrong end of a big score line the following week, falling to the Sydney Roosters 59-0.

This was the Broncos’ largest defeat in franchise history. Brisbane then lost four consecutive games before defeating the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 26-8 in Round 9, snapping the Broncos’ six-game losing streak and giving them their third and final win of the 2020 season. Brisbane then lost four consecutive games to the Wests Tigers, Melbourne, Cronulla-Sutherland, and Souths. Following the Round 13 loss to South Sydney, Seibold took a leave of absence to spend time with his family in Sydney, with Peter Gentle taking over as coach.

Following reports that Brisbane had offered Seibold $1 million to leave the club, both parties agreed to an early termination of Seibold’s contract, despite Brisbane losing 10 games with Seibold at the helm.Seibold left the club as the only coach without a winning record, with a 34% winning percentage. 2020 was Brisbane’s worst year under Seibold, with only three wins from twenty games and a points differential of -356, resulting in the club’s first wooden spoon.
