Inoki met Rikidōzan at the age of 17 and went back to Japan for the Japan Pro Wrestling Alliance (JWA) as his disciple. He trained in the JWA dojo under the renowned Karl Gotch, complementing further his training under amateur wrestler Isao Yoshiwara and kosen judoka Kiyotaka Otsubo.One of his dojo classmates was Giant Baba. After Rikidozan’s murder, Inoki worked in Baba’s shadow until he left for an excursion to the United States in 1964.

Kanji Inoki was a Japanese professional wrestler, martial artist, politician, and MMA and professional wrestling promoter. His ring name was Antonio Inoki, a tribute to fellow professional wrestler Antonino Rocca. Inoki was a twelve-time world champion in professional wrestling, most notably as the first IWGP Heavyweight Champion and the first Asian WWF Heavyweight Champion – a reign that was not officially recognized by WWE.
Under the tutelage of Rikidzan, Inoki began his professional wrestling career in the 1960s for the Japan Pro Wrestling Alliance (JWA). Inoki quickly rose to prominence as one of the most popular stars in Japanese professional wrestling history. He turned his wrestling career into one of Japan’s most recognizable athletes, a reputation bolstered by his 1976 fight against world champion boxer Muhammad Ali, which served as a forerunner to modern-day mixed martial arts.
Inoki headlined two shows in North Korea with Ric Flair in 1995, drawing 150,000 and 190,000 spectators, the highest attendances in professional wrestling history.On April 4, 1998, Inoki wrestled his final match against Don Frye and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2010.
Inoki began his career as a promoter in 1972, when he established New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). He was the sole owner of NJPW until 2005, when he sold his controlling stake to Yuke’s video game company. He established the Inoki Genome Federation in 2007. (IGF). Inoki founded ISM in 2017 and left IGF the following year. Along with Matsubayashi-ry master Yukio Mizutani, he co-founded the karate style Kansui-ry.
Inoki entered politics in 1989, while still a wrestler, when he was elected to the Japanese House of Councillors. During his first term in the House of Councillors, Inoki successfully negotiated the release of Japanese hostages from Saddam Hussein prior to the outbreak of the Gulf War. His first term as a councillor ended in 1995, but he was re-elected in 2013. Inoki stepped down from politics in 2019.
