Professional Career
During World War II, Laboe made his radio debut on KSAN in San Francisco, while stationed at Treasure Island. The station had been deprived of technicians due to the war, and he held a radiotelephone licence. At KSAN, he pioneered the request-and-dedication concept, taking phone calls from listeners while playing late-night big band and jazz records.
Initially, Laboe would go on every 15 minutes to announce what segments would follow, but after noticing a gap between the last segment ending at 11:00 p.m. and the station’s signoff time at 12:00 a.m., he decided to use that hour to play swing and jazz music. The calls he would take from listeners while on air were what set him apart from other hosts. Because technology had yet to catch up with Laboe’s ambitions, he would repeat what the person on the phone was saying to the listeners.Laboe gave up his job as a DJ to help the US military transmit Morse Code messages to ships travelling in the South Pacific.
When he returned to Southern California and started working at KCMJ in Palm Springs, he was the only broadcaster in town, and he would frequently meet with his fans after signing off at bars. He later returned to Los Angeles and started working at KPOP. While working at KPOP, Laboe had the idea to take his show on the road and broadcast live from the Cahuenga and Sunset Scrivner’s Drive-In.
Teenagers would hang out at the drive-in and make live on-air dedications to songs. Laboe started compiling a list of the most frequently requested songs. People who had recently broken up would frequently call in and ask him to play love songs to help them win back their significant others. As the dance hall’s popularity grew, Laboe found a promoter and a ballroom east of Los Angeles, and the El Monte dance hall was born.
He had the audience and the requests while the live radio show was on. He started working on an album called Oldies But Goodies, a term he trademarked. Laboe founded the record label Original Sound Records in 1959 to promote new musical talent he discovered. In 1959, the label released two instrumental hit songs: Sandy Nelson’s breakout hit “Teen Beat” and Preston Epps’ “Bongo Rock.” Laboe was also given writing credit for both songs.Later, he relocated to KXLA (later KRLA), where he remained for many years.Laboe worked for radio station KGGI in the 1990s.
The Art Laboe Connection, a syndicated request and dedication radio show, debuted in January 2006. The show debuted on KDES-FM in Palm Springs and KOKO-FM in Fresno on weeknights. It quickly grew to include KHHT (Hot 92.3) in Los Angeles (until its format change in 2015), KAJM (Mega 104.3) in Phoenix, and stations in Bakersfield and Santa Maria. Laboe later worked as a DJ on two syndicated radio shows that aired throughout the American Southwest. ‘The Art Laboe Connection’ and ‘The Art Laboe Sunday Special’ Art could be heard in 14 radio markets in 2018, including Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.
