Barry Hall is a former Australian Football League player who played for the St Kilda Football Club, Sydney Swans, and Western Bulldogs (AFL). Barry Hall Professional Career
In 1996, Hall made his AFL debut for St Kilda. He helped to replace the vacuum left by Tony Lockett, the club’s all-time leading scorer, who had transferred to the Swans the previous season. His most noteworthy effort for the Saints was a three-goal burst in the second quarter of the 1997 Grand Final, which put his team in a strong position going into half-time despite St Kilda going on to lose by 31 points to Adelaide at the MCG.
He was a goalkicker for St Kilda from 1999 to 2001, kicking 144 goals in 88 games and being the club’s top goalkicker in 1999 and 2001. In Round 16, 2001, against the Western Bulldogs, he kicked a career-high eight goals. He left St Kilda in style at the close of 2001, scoring a game-winning goal after the final siren of a Round 22 encounter against Hawthorn. The development of Nick Riewoldt, Justin Koschitzke, and the addition of Fraser Gehrig, as well as wage cap concerns, were among the key reasons for departing.
Hall joined the Swans for the 2002 season and flourished under Paul Roos’ tutelage. Hall announced his plan to retire at the end of the 2011 season on July 19, 2011. Despite captaining Sydney to a championship in 2005, Hall indicated that he wanted to be remembered as a Bulldogs player since they gave him one last chance at AFL football in 2010. This news came in the week leading up to the Bulldogs’ match against the Swans at the Sydney Cricket Ground; he kicked five goals in that match as the Bulldogs were defeated by 39 points.
