Bernard Pollard Professional Career
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Pollard in the second round, 54th overall, in the 2006 NFL Draft. Pollard spent the majority of his rookie season on special teams, finishing with 10 tackles, one pass break-up, one forced fumble, and three blocked punts, one against Arizona, one against San Diego, and one against Jacksonville. Pollard began the 2007 NFL season as a starter. Those three blocked punts rank second in Chiefs history, trailing only CB Albert Lewis (1983-1993), who had ten.
Pollard’s blocked punt against the Jacksonville Jaguars, as well as his recovery of a Chris Hanson punt for a touchdown, helped propel the Kansas City Chiefs to a 35-30 victory and eventual playoff berth. He was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
In week ten of the 2007 season, he also blocked a punt against the Denver Broncos that went out of the end zone for a safety. The Chiefs eventually lost by a score of 27 to 11. On October 14, 2007, he intercepted his first NFL pass from Carson Palmer against the Cincinnati Bengals. Pollard also intercepted Jon Kitna in a December 23 game against the Detroit Lions.
On September 24, 2009, Pollard signed with the Houston Texans. Pollard had a career year in his first year with Houston, recording 102 tackles (81 solo), 1.5 sacks, four interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns. The following season, he had 111 tackles and four forced fumbles. Pollard signed a one-year contract with the Tennessee Titans on March 21, 2013.
Pollard was fined $10,000 on August 17, 2013, for a late hit on Aldrick Robinson during Preseason Week 2 against the Washington Redskins. Pollard was fined $42,000 on September 18, 2013, for a hit on Andre Johnson that resulted in Johnson receiving a concussion. Pollard had 99 combined tackles, 0.5 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 5 passes defended in 16 games in 2013.
Following the 2011 season, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski caught a 20-yard pass with Pollard in coverage in the AFC Championship Game. Pollard encircled Gronkowski and threw him to the ground. Pollard’s right thigh landed forcefully on Gronkowski’s left ankle as he hit the turf. Gronkowski sustained a severe ankle sprain. Gronkowski returned to the Super Bowl two weeks later, but he only had two catches for 26 yards due to the injury.
As the Patriots were driving to tie the game in the fourth quarter of the 2012 AFC Championship Game, Pollard launched a direct helmet-to-helmet hit that concussed running back Stevan Ridley. Ridley immediately lost consciousness and control of the ball, which the Ravens scooped up to take possession of while wide receiver Brandon Lloyd tended to his fallen teammate.
The Ravens’ victory was complete, and they advanced to Super Bowl XLVII, where they defeated the San Francisco 49ers. Ridley recovered in time to play in the 2013 NFL season, but he was unable to keep his starting job and has been released by five different NFL teams since then. Stevan Ridley initiated the helmet-to-helmet hit, so no foul was called on that play.
On March 3, 2014, Pollard and the Titans had agreed on a new two-year contract, keeping him in Tennessee through the 2015 NFL season. During Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns, Pollard suffered an Achilles tendon injury following a Browns’ go-ahead touchdown.
The next day, an MRI revealed that his Achilles tendon was considered ruptured, prematurely ending his 2014 season. In 5 games, Pollard made 27 tackles with a sack and a pass defended. He was officially placed on injured reserve on October 8.In the early off-season, Pollard requested a release. On March 3, 2015, Pollard was released by the Titans.
