Bhavani was born into a family of the bourgeoisie in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Her mother was a homemaker, while her father was a priest.In 2003, Bhavani Devi began her playing career. She attended the Muruga Dhanushkodi Girls Higher Secondary in Chennai, followed by the St. John’s Engineering College in Chennai.

In 2004, she was exposed to varsity-level fencing. After completing 10th grade, she joined the SAI (Sports Authority of India) Center in Thalassery, Kerala. At the age of 14, she participated in her first international event in Turkey, where she was shown a red card with a three-minute delay. In 2010, she earned a trophy at the Philippine Asian Championships.

Starting with a trophy at the Commonwealth Championships held in Malaysia in 2009, Bhavani Devi has won a trophy at the 2010 International Open, she also won  Philippines 2012 Common Wealth Championship.

In 2014, she won the silver at the Asian Championships under 23 category within the Philippines, becoming the primary Indian to try to to so. After the successful 2014 Asian Championship, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa awarded her INR 3 lakh as support for training within the US.

In 2015, she became one among the 15 athletes selected for the Rahul Dravid Athletes Mentorship Program. Bhavani Devi has won 2 gold medals, one each at the 2012 Commonwealth Championships, Jersey and 2014 Tuscany Cup, Italy. </span

She finished fifth within the Viking Cup 2016 Icelandic International Saber tournament held in Reykjavik and may be a potential candidate for fencing for India within the 2020 Olympics. She won a silver within the women’s saber individual category at the Tournoi satellite fencing competition in Ghent, Belgium in 2019, after losing to Bashta Anna from Azerbaijan.

She made history by becoming the primary Indian to win a trophy at the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship. In Canberra at Saber Program. She defeated Scotland’s Catriona Thomson within the semi-finals then Emily Roux of England. She trains in Italy also because the Sports Authority of India in Kannur.
