From 1956 to 1969, William Felton Russell was a professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was the centrepiece of the Celtics dynasty, which won 11 NBA championships during his 13-year career. He was a five-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) and a 12-time NBA All-Star.

The National Hockey League’s Russell and Henri Richard are tied for the most championships won by an athlete in a North American sports league.Russell is widely regarded as one of the all-time great basketball players. He captained the gold-medal winning United States national basketball team at the 1956 Summer Olympics, and he led the San Francisco Dons to two consecutive NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956.

Despite his offensive limitations (he averaged 15.1 points per game), Russell was a dominant player of his era due to his rebounding, defence, and leadership.His shot-blocking and man-to-man defence were major reasons for the Celtics’ dominance during his career. He stood 6 ft 10 in (2.08 m) tall and had a 7 ft 4 in (2.24 m) arm span.

Russell was also known for his rebounding abilities, as he led the NBA in rebounds four times, had a dozen consecutive seasons with 1,000 or more rebounds, and is still ranked second all-time in total rebounds and rebounds per game. He is one of only two NBA players to have at least 50 rebounds in a game.

Russell was the first black player to achieve superstar status in the NBA, following in the footsteps of black pioneers Earl Lloyd, Chuck Cooper, and Sweetwater Clifton. He was also the Celtics’ player-coach for three seasons (1966-69), becoming the league’s first black coach and the first to win a championship. Russell was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2011 for his achievements on the court and in the civil rights movement.

Russell was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975, a founding member of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006, and a member of the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007. He was named to the NBA 25th Anniversary Team in 1971 and the NBA 35th Anniversary Team in 1980, and he was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996, making him one of only four players to receive all three honours. He was also named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.

In his honour, the NBA renamed the NBA Finals MVP Award in 2009.He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for the second time in 2021 for his coaching career. Russell’s jersey number 6 was retired by the NBA shortly after his death in 2022, making him the only player in NBA history to receive the honour.
