Bobby East Professional Career

East, then 16, became the youngest driver to win a feature USAC National Midget event at the Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, Indiana, in 2001. East raced full-time in the USAC National Midget Series, winning the championship in 2004 while driving the Steve Lewis Racing No. 9. His father, Bob East, is a well-known short-track car builder of midgets, sprints, and silver crown machines, and he built the car’s chassis. At the age of 19, he holds the distinction of being the series’ youngest national champion.

East was the most successful driver in the 2004 USAC season, winning 15 races across the series’ three divisions. During the season, he won seven times in national midgets, five times in national sprint cars, and once in each of the Silver Crown, Western States Sprint Car, and Speedrome Regional Midget Series.

The Hut Hundred and the Turkey Night Grand Prix were the season’s highlights. During this illustrious period, he earned the nickname ‘Beast’ from his adoring fans, which is an amalgamation of the first letter of his first name ‘B’ combined with his last name ‘East,’ which is unlike his kind demeanour and character to those who know him, but better describes his victorious 2004 season on Team Lewis, where he finished first overall in his No. 9 car.

East then moved on to stock car racing. He attempted to qualify for three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races in Roush Racing’s No. 33 Ford, but failed to qualify for two of them. He crashed late in the event where he did qualify and finished 30th. In addition, he drove the No. 21 for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing at the Homstead season finale but did not qualify.

East also made his ARCA Re/Max Series debut that year, driving the No. 29 Ford for K Automotive Racing at Talladega in October 2005. A few weeks later, he made his NASCAR Busch Series debut in the No. 46 for ST Motorsports at Memphis, finishing 17th.

East raced nearly full-time in the same truck in 2006, where he was teammates in the team’s driver development programme with fellow rookie Marcos Ambrose, who drove the No. 20 truck. Despite missing the first two races of the season, East finished 23rd in points.

East raced part-time in the Busch Series with Brewco Motorsports in 2007, splitting time in the No. 27, No. 37, and No. 43 cars. After a change in ownership during the season, Brewco became Baker Curb Racing.

East returned to the Truck Series on a part-time basis in 2008, rejoining Roush in the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford F-150. This included winning the pole position for the race at IRP. East was also tasked by Roush with qualifying Cup Series Carl Edwards’ Nationwide (formerly Busch) Series No. 60 car for the race at Memphis, where he made his debut three years earlier.

East, on the other hand, did not qualify very high in the field, finishing 34th, whereas Edwards went on to win the race after working his way through the field to the front, taking the lead on lap 69 and staying there for the rest of the race. This would turn out to be East’s final NASCAR race.
