Ayan, who is of Somali and Ethiopian descent, revealed that she and her sister were both forced to have female circumcisions in order to remain virgins until marriage, a practise that is still practised in some parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
“I’m a survivor,” Ayan said exclusively to E! News after speaking candidly about the horrific event on the Bravo series’ August 17 episode. “I felt completely betrayed by my culture and my family. This is a barbaric practise that should not be carried out on young girls. It happened to me 35 years ago, and I still can’t get over it.”Ayan’s aunt and grandmother brought her and her sister to a stranger’s house, where a man painfully “sewed” up their genitals.
“It’s done in my culture to keep women virgins,” the fashion model explained. “Because of this, everyone in my culture is a virgin. Because how will you have sex if you’re sewn as a girl until you marry? It’s a method of keeping men happy.”
