Chau formed the Kingold Group in the early 1990s. Property, finance, education, hospitality, healthcare, and media are among the group’s key interests. In 2001, Chau formed a joint venture with the Yangcheng Evening News of Guangzhou, PRC, to start publishing the New Express Daily there.

Chau founded the pro-Beijing group in 2004. His daughter Winky Chow, a former ethnic policy affairs adviser to New South Wales State Premier Bob Carr, manages the Australian New Express Daily, a simplified character Chinese-language daily published in Australia. Carr presided over the event’s official start. The journal has actively promoted the interests of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Australia.

Philanthropy

Chau, who was still based in Guangzhou at the time, contributed CN3 million to a Chinese Public Security Bureau training centre in May 2009 to help society “be well controlled.” Chau provided A$20 million over ten years to the A$150 million construction cost of the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, which is part of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), as well as a $5 million scholarship fund. Another A$15 million was donated in 2015 to the University of Sydney’s Chau Chak Wing Museum’s building. The museum opens in 2020 after the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building was built in 2013.

Chau gave A$60,000 to the Anzac Diversity Education Program at the Australian War Memorial in 2015. He also contributed another A$500,000 to the establishment of the Kingold Education and Media Centre. Chau donated roughly A$4 million to the two major Australian political parties in the four years between 2014 and 2018.
