After working at BBC Newcastle, where he met future presenter Rob Young, Mason relocated in 2002 to the BBC regional desk in Westminster. He issued his first report from Westminster in 2004. Mason spent two years as a correspondent for BBC News in Europe, followed by a brief stint as a political reporter for BBC Radio 5 Live. In 2012, he became a political journalist for BBC News.

The Yorkshire Post has described Mason’s broadcasting style as “informal,” and this has garnered attention during his television appearances as an occasional host of BBC Breakfast and a political correspondent.
