Dow’s career began when he won the role of Wally Cleaver in Leave It to Beaver in a casting call despite having almost no acting experience. Dow appeared on Leave It to Beaver for six years, until the show ended in 1963.
Following that, he appeared on several other television shows, including My Three Sons, Dr. Kildare, The Greatest Show on Earth, Never Too Young, and Mr. Novak in three different roles on five episodes. Then, from 1965 to 1968, he served in the United States National Guard, which put an end to his acting career. He returned to acting as a guest star on Adam-12, Love American Style, Knight Rider, Square Pegs, The Mod Squad, The Hardy Boys, and Emergency! Dow continued acting in the 1970s while working in construction and studying journalism and filmmaking.
Dow played Wally Cleaver in a reunion television movie and the subsequent series The New Leave It to Beaver from 1983 to 1989.He wrote an episode of The New Leave It to Beaver in 1986. For his role as Wally Cleaver, he received the Young Artist Foundation’s Former Child Star Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987.
He made his directorial debut in 1989 with an episode of The New Lassie, and he has since directed episodes of Get a Life, Harry and the Hendersons, Coach, Babylon 5, Crusade, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. For Babylon 5, he was the visual effects supervisor. He did visual effects for the Fox television series Doctor Who in 1996.Dow’s most recent film appearance was in Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star in 2003.
Dow was spotted promoting the Leave It To Beaver television series and other classic television series on the MeTV television network in April 2019.He was a sculptor who created abstract bronze sculptures in addition to acting. Regarding his work, he stated, “The figures are abstract and are meant to represent the truth of the interactions as I see and feel them rather than reality. I find the wood in Topanga Canyon’s hills, and each piece evolves from my subconscious. I use the lost wax process to create limited editions of nine bronzes from moulds of the original burl sculpture.”
One of his bronze sculptures was on display in Barbara Billingsley’s backyard garden, who played his mother on Leave It to Beaver. In December 2008, he was chosen as one of three sculptors to exhibit at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibition in the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, France. He represented the US delegation, which included artists from the Karen Lynne Gallery. His abstract “Unarmed Warrior,” a bronze figure of a woman holding a shield, was displayed at a Parisian shopping mall.
