In 1999, Johns met Australian actress, singer, and model Natalie Imbruglia backstage at a Silverchair concert in London. The band’s career began when the three members were 15 years old, when a demo recording of their song “Tomorrow” won a competition sponsored by SBS TV’s Nomad show. After “Tomorrow” stood at No. 1 on the Australian singles chart for six weeks, the group, now known as Silverchair, accepted a three-album deal with Sony Music in 1994, and the label rushed to release their first album Frogstomp in 1995.
Freak Show was released in 1997, followed by Neon Ballroom in 1999, and finally Diorama in 2002.Following the release of Diorama, Silverchair took a long break before releasing their next album.Late in 2005, Johns and Silverchair reformed and announced the recording of a new album, Young Modern, named after a moniker given to Johns by composer Van Dyke Parks.
