Daniel Paul Johns is an Australian musician, singer, and songwriter who is best known for being the former frontman, guitarist, and primary songwriter for the rock band Silverchair. Johns is also a member of The Dissociatives, along with Paul Mac, and Dreams, along with Luke Steele. In 2015, he released his first solo album, Talk. The reclusive musician purchased a home in Mayfield, Newcastle, but the lucky lady listed on the settlement records for the $503,100 property is not his girlfriend Michelle Leslie. After purchasing the top two floors of the apartment building for $1.6 million in 2001, he teamed up with the other four owners to sell for $14.8 million. The band’s career began when the three members were 15 years old, when a demo recording of their song “Tomorrow” won a competition sponsored by SBS TV’s Nomad show. After “Tomorrow” stood at No. 1 on the Australian singles chart for six weeks, the group, now known as Silverchair, accepted a three-album deal with Sony Music in 1994, and the label rushed to release their first album Frogstomp in 1995.
Freak Show was released in 1997, followed by Neon Ballroom in 1999, and finally Diorama in 2002.Following the release of Diorama, Silverchair took a long break before releasing their next album.Late in 2005, Johns and Silverchair reformed and announced the recording of a new album, Young Modern, named after a moniker given to Johns by composer Van Dyke Parks.
The Across the Great Divide tour with fellow Australian band Powderfinger followed the release of the new album on March 31, 2007.Silverchair announced on their website in May 2011 that the band would be going into “indefinite hibernation,” explaining that “the spark simply isn’t there between the three of us at the moment.”
