Campbell’s professional career began with a non-singing role in the avant-garde 1990s production of The Trojans at the Scottish Opera. As a teenager, he appeared in a Carmen production with the Scottish Opera at Covent Garden Royal Opera House. Campbell rose to prominence after appearing on the British talent show Popstars in 2001. A year later, he was chosen to compete in the finals of the TV talent show Pop Idol. He turned down a record deal from Simon Cowell and instead signed with producer Steve Lillywhite.

“Colourblind,” Campbell’s first single, was released on July 29, 2002, and debuted at number one on the UK singles chart, where it remained for two weeks; it was certified silver.Dive In, his debut album, was certified platinum in the United Kingdom in 2004, peaking at number six on the UK Albums Chart during the competitive pre-Christmas sales period.He went on to have five UK top ten singles and a gold album.

He wrote all 12 songs on the Dive In album and produced one of them, “Better Than That,” while working with other producers such as The Misfits and The Matrix on the others. The album’s executive producer was Steve Lillywhite. Campbell, then known as Darius Danesh, supported Shakira on her world tour before embarking on his own sell-out UK Dive In Tour.

The Dive In Tour was held in April and May of 2003. Due to popular demand, the fifteen May dates were expanded to twenty-three. [His book Sink or Swim, about the perils of the music business, was the sixth best seller in the Sunday Times. After his album went platinum in India, he headlined with Alanis Morissette and contributed to the War Child charity album with Coldplay and Oasis.

After learning that his father had terminal cancer, he wrote and dedicated his second studio album Live Twice to Dr. Booth Danesh, who later recovered miraculously. The album’s title track, Live Twice, became his fifth Top Ten single in 2005.Campbell won the UK’s ITV1 talent show Popstar to Operastar in January and February 2010, in which eight pop stars were trained to perform famous opera arias. Tenor Rolando Villazón mentored him, and he later dueted with him on the song “The Impossible Dream.”

In May 2010, he performed as toreador Escamillo in Bizet’s opera Carmen at London’s O2 Arena. He took on the lead role of Carmen’s lover at the age of 29. In 2010, he also appeared in The History of the Big Bands tour, a show about the Big Band and Swing Era that featured Frank Sinatra’s songs as well as music by Harry James, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Woody Herman, and Buddy Rich.
