David John Leckie  was an Australian media executive who was the chief executive officer of Seven West Mediafrom 1994 to 2012.

Leckie maintained a role in the media company as executive director of media at Seven Group Holdings, which holds investments in Seven West, earthmoving company WesTrac and Agricultural Bank of China.

Early Life and Family

Mr Leckie was born in Sydney in 1951 and was the eldest son of Ron and Joyce Leckie.He was educated at Newington College and Macquarie University.In a statement, his family said he died on Tuesday morning at Mulberry Farm in Robertson, New South Wales, after a long illness.

Mr Leckie ran Nine during its period as the overall ratings leader, but it was his success in rebuilding the Seven Network that cemented his legacy in television.After Mr Packer sacked Mr Leckie in 2001, he joined Seven in 2003 and transformed it into the top rating free-to-air network in Australia.

Mr Leckie was placed in an induced coma in 2008 after his finger, which he injured in a garage door, became badly infected and he developed septicaemia.

When Mr Leckie regained consciousness, Mr Stokes said he had wanted to know the details of Swans’ player Barry Hall’s on-field altercation with West Coast Eagles player Brent Staker.

Mr Leckie stepped down as chief executive of Seven West Media in June 2012.He took on an advisory role at Seven Group Holdings, which controls Seven West.Mr Leckie retired in 2017 but was brought back to Seven in 2020 in an executive mentoring role.

In a statement, Seven West Media said Mr Leckie made an “invaluable and enduring contribution to the Australian media industry”.”The board, executives and staff of Seven West Media are greatly saddened by the passing of David Leckie and extend their deepest condolences to his wife Skye and his sons Tim, Harry and Ben,” the statement said.

Nine chief executive Mike Sneesby said Mr Leckie was a giant of television.”He contributed enormously to the success we all shared with him here at Nine, his instincts and leadership heralded the golden era of Australian television,” he said.
