Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today announced that Delhi will be closed over the weekend from Friday to deal with the huge increase in Kovid cases. During weekend curfews, essential activities such as planned weddings will be allowed along the pass.

Auditoriums, restaurants, malls, gyms and spas will be closed and movie theaters will be allowed with one-third of their capacity. Eating out is prohibited and only home delivery and takeaway are allowed. The weekly market will continue but with restrictions - a market will be allowed on any given day in a given area.

Arvind Kejriwal said in a video address, "These restrictions are for you and your families. It would be inconvenient but these restrictions are necessary to break the chain of transmission."He said, "Don't panic. All the necessary services will be available by the weekend. Delhi CM Kejriwal announced to curb these after an earlier meeting with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and top officials today.

On Wednesday, 17,282 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Delhi, the highest in a day due to the epidemic. This figure makes Delhi the most affected city in the second wave of infection through the country.There were over 100 deaths yesterday.Delhi's rate of people testing positive has increased from 12.4 percent to about 16 percent on Monday.Prior to yesterday, the highest one-day spike in November was reported in Delhi at 8,593 cases.There are 50,736 active cases in Delhi so far.

In India, cases of Kovid climbed to a new record of over two lakh infections in 24 hours.Mr Kejriwal has previously said that the lockdown is not the best way to slow down the spread of coronovirus and it will only apply if the "hospital system collapses" in Delhi.

The Delhi government this week connected banquet halls, schools and sports complexes to hospitals to ramp up beds to treat Kovid. Private hospitals have been asked to set aside a part of the bed for cases of the virus.
