Professional Career

The “Oakland Raiders” selected Carr with the 36th overall choice in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He agreed to a four-year, $5.37 million contract in May 2014, including a $2.2 million signing bonus. In the history of the “Raiders squad,” he became the first rookie quarterback to start the season opener. He had a high ankle sprain and an MLC sprain in Week 4 of the season, forcing him to abandon the game. He established a new Raiders franchise mark on October 12 for the most throwing touchdowns by a rookie in a single regular season game with 4 touchdown passes.

Carr’s (previously winless) Raiders defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 24-20 in November 2014, then on December 7 they defeated the San Francisco 49ers 24-13 to earn their first NFL victory. He suffered a throwing hand injury before the start of the 2015 season, but by the second week he was back in action and completed the game-winning touchdown pass against the “Baltimore Ravens.” He kept up his winning ways and was selected for the “2016 Pro-Bowl” in January 2016.

Carr got his first “AFC Offensive Player of the Week” award against the “Tampa Bay Buccaneers” in the eighth week of the 2016 campaign. He broke the previous record of 10,000 passing yards during this season, and he also helped the ‘Raiders’ reach their first postseason appearance since 2002. He was named for the “Pro-Bowl” for a second year in a row on December 20, 2016. He was injured, though, and was unable to participate in the Pro Bowl.

He broke his fibula during a game on Christmas Eve 2016 against the Indianapolis Colts, which prevented him from playing for the rest of the season for the Raiders. On the NFL Top 100 Players of 2017, his teammates ranked him as the 11th best player. He agreed to a five-year, $125 million contract deal in June 2017, with a signing bonus of $12.5 million, $70 million in total guarantees, and 40 million completely guaranteed.

Up until August of 2017 when Matthew Stafford of the “Detroit Lions” shattered his record, Derek was the highest-paid player in the NFL. The “Raiders” finished the 2017 season with a 6-10 record, missing the playoffs. In January 2018, Carr received his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
