Patterson started competing in high jump as a child. She attended Little Athletics with a friend and quickly fell in love with the sport. Patterson took part in a variety of local events. She finished second at the national junior championships in 2011, with a personal best of 1.82 m (5 ft 11+12 in). She won the title the following year and improved to 1.87 m (6 ft 1+12 in) that November.

In her first international competition, she won gold at the 2013 World Youth Athletics Championships, setting a personal best of 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) to win by six centimetres. In December, she set a new Oceanian junior record by clearing 1.96 m (6 ft 5 in) at the Australian Schools Championships, equaling the world youth record held by Charmaine Gale-Weavers (set in 1981) and Olga Turchak. The 17-year-old failed three attempts at the Australian senior record of 1.98 m (6 ft 5+34 in).

She chose to skip the 2014 World Junior Athletics Championships in order to compete for Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The gamble paid off as she won the gold medal by jumping 1.94 m (6 ft 4+1/4 in) ahead of England’s Isobel Pooley. The 18-year-old is now the third youngest Australian Commonwealth Games champion in history.

Patterson did not make the Commonwealth Games squad in 2018, so he took a year off before returning and qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.She set a new Australian record of 1.99m in New Zealand in 2020.In 2022, she broke the Oceania Indoor record by jumping 2.00 metres in Belgrade.
