Adani moved to Mumbai as a teenager in 1978 to work as a diamond sorter for Mahendra Brothers. He worked there for about 2-3 years before opening his own diamond brokerage in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar.
In 1981, his elder brother Mansukhbhai Adani purchased a plastics unit in Ahmedabad and asked him to run it. This venture was designed to be Adani’s gateway to global trading via PVC (PVC) imports.
He began importing primary polymers for small-scale industries in 1985. Adani established Adani Exports Limited, now known as Adani Enterprises Limited – the Adani Group’s company – in 1988. Initially, the company traded in agricultural and power commodities.
In 1991, economic liberalisation policies favoured his company, and he began expanding into metals, textiles, and agricultural products trading.The Gujarat government announced managerial outsourcing of the Mundra Port in 1994, and Adani was awarded the contract in 1995.
He discovered the primary jetty in 1995. The operations were transferred to Adani Ports & SEZ Limited from Mundra Port & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ).
