George Kambosos Professional Career

Kambosos made his professional boxing debut in May 2013, at the age of 19, when he defeated Filipino fighter Jayson Mac Gura by technical knockout in the second round. He won the WBA Oceania title in December 2016 by defeating world number nine Brandon Ogilvie.

In May 2017, he faced Qamil Balla, whom he defeated by unanimous decision in a ten-round fight.Five months later, he knocked out Krai Setthaphon in the ninth round to capture the WBA Oceania and IBF Pan Pacific lightweight titles.

On December 14, 2019, Kambosos faced his most difficult opponent to date, former IBF lightweight champion Mickey Bey. On the undercard of Terence Crawford vs. Egidijus Kavaliauskas, he won by split decision. Kambosos won by scores of 97-92, 96-93, and 94-95.

The IBF ordered undefeated unified lightweight champion Teófimo López to defend his titles against Kambosos, their number one contender and mandatory challenger, on January 9, 2021.

The fight was originally scheduled for 5 June 2021 at the LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, but it was postponed several times due to complications involving López contracting COVID-19 and disagreements over the venue.

The fight had gone to purse bids, which Triller won with a winning bid of more than US$6 million. On 6 October, however, it was revealed that the IBF had found Triller in breach of its contract obligation to stage the fight, and that its rights would be awarded to the second highest bidder, Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom, and the fight was shown live exclusively on the streaming service DAZN.

Kambosos won the fight by unanimous decision to become the new unified lightweight world champion. One judge scored the fight 114-113 for López, while the other two judges scored it 115-112 and 115-111 for Kambosos.

Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney fought on June 5, 2022, at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, to determine the first undisputed lightweight champion of the four-belt era.The fight was marred by controversy, as Kambosos failed to make weight on his first attempt. He started out weighing 135.36 pounds, which was 0.36 pounds more than the 135-pound limit for the lightweight division. Kambosos weighed 134.49 lbs on his second attempt, an hour later, within the two-hour time limit.

The fight then went ahead as planned, and Kambosos was defeated by Haney by unanimous decision, with two judges scoring the fight 116-112 and one scoring it 118-110, all in favor of Haney. The fight agreement included an automatic rematch clause, which Kambosos intends to use. A possible rematch would take place in late 2022 in Australia.
