Norman began working as Charlie Earp’s apprentice in the Royal Queensland Golf Club pro shop shortly after, earning A$38 per week. Norman turned professional as a tournament player in 1976, six years after he initially started golfing. That year, he won the West Lakes Classic at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, South Australia, for the first time. He joined the European Tour in 1977 and won his first European event, the Martini International, at the Blairgowrie Club in Scotland, that same year.
