Harvey Weinstein is a former American film producer who has been convicted of sexual offences. Together with his brother, Bob Weinstein, he co-founded the entertainment firm Miramax, which has produced a number of popular independent films.
Weinstein received an Oscar for producing Shakespeare in Love and seven Tony Awards for plays and musicals, including The Producers, Billy Elliot the Musical, and August: Osage County.
After leaving Miramax, Weinstein and his brother Bob created the mini-major film firm The Weinstein Company. He was co-chairman from 2005 until 2017 alongside Bob.
Weinstein was sacked from his firm and expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in October 2017, following allegations of sexual harassment stretching back to the late 1970s. By October 31, more than 80 women had accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and/or rape.
This phenomenon is known as the “Weinstein effect” The claims prompted the #MeToo social media campaign and additional abuse allegations against numerous powerful individuals across the world. In May 2018, Weinstein was arrested and charged with rape in New York, and in February 2020, he was convicted guilty of two of five felonies.

On July 20, 2021, he was extradited to Los Angeles to face further allegations in a future trial. On December 19, 2022, he was convicted guilty of three of seven crimes.
