Herschel Walker was born on March 3, 1962, to Willis and Christine Walker in Augusta, Georgia, into a poor family. He was the seventh of his parents’ seven children. Herschel grew up in the Georgia town of Wrightsville. He was an obese child who was physically inactive for the first 11 years of his life. He was not an athletic child and showed little interest in sports.

Herschel won the rushing title while playing for the New Jersey Generals in 1983 and 1985. In 1985, he rushed for 2,411 yards, a single-season rushing record for any player. In 18 games, he scored with an average of 5.50 yards per attempt.
