House of the Dragon Release Date & Brief

We’re returning to Westeros after a three-year hiatus for an all-new prequel series set in the world of Game of Thrones. House of the Dragon transports viewers to House Targaryen’s reign 200 years before the events of the original series, when King Viserys Targaryen ruled over the Seven Kingdoms with the help of 17 dragons. Our House of the Dragon premiere review stated that it “feels like Game of Thrones is back – and not in a Season 8 way.” House of Dragon will be released on August 21. If you’re curious about what it’s about or how you can watch it for yourself, read on.

House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon, based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, is set during the reign of the Targaryens, 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The show follows the dynasty’s final years, including the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. House of the Dragon will tell a more focused story than Game of Thrones, one that is less concerned with Westeros’ global politics and more concerned with the conflict within the Targaryen family, including the all-important issue of succession.
