Huma Mahmood Abedin is an American political staffer who was vice chair of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign for President of the United States. Prior to that, Abedin was deputy chief of staff to Clinton when she was U.S. Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013.She was also the traveling chief of staff and former assistant for Clinton during her 2008 presidential campaign for the Democratic nomination in the 2008 presidential election.

Abedin was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on July 28, 1975, to Syed Zainul Abedin and Saleha Mahmood Abedin. Abedin was born in Pakistan and is of Pakistani origin. She has a brother and two sisters. Abedin went to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with her family when she was two years old, where she was reared and resided until she returned to the United States for college. During her childhood and adolescence, Abedin travelled extensively and attended a British girls’ school.
Her parents were also professors. Her father, who was born on April 2, 1928, in New Delhi, British India, was an Islamic and Middle Eastern scholar who earned his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania and then founded the Institute of Muslim Minority Affairs in 1978 to study Muslim communities in non-Muslim societies around the world.
He started the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs in 1979, which his wife took up after his death; from 1996 until 2008, Huma was identified as an associate editor. Her mother was born in Pakistan before to the country’s 1947 independence from the British Empire. Huma is currently an associate professor of sociology and dean at Dar Al-Hekma College in Jeddah, having earned her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. She wanted to work in the White House press office as a youngster and dreamed to be a journalist like her role model Christiane Amanpour. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism with a minor in political science from George Washington University.

Abedin began working as an intern in the White House in 1996 while still a student at George Washington University, when she was assigned to then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. She worked as an assistant editor for the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs from 1996 to 2008.
She worked as Clinton’s personal aide’s backup for numerous years. During Clinton’s victorious 2000 U.S. Senate campaign in New York, she officially took over as her aide and personal advisor, and later worked as Clinton’s travelling chief of staff and “body lady” during Clinton’s unsuccessful 2008 Democratic presidential campaign.
Abedin was named Clinton’s deputy chief of staff in the State Department in 2009.
