After taking a break from music in Morocco, Brown launched his solo career with the release of his debut solo single “My Star” on January 12, 1998 in the United Kingdom. On February 2, 1998, the debut album Unfinished Monkey Business was released. Brown produced and financed the album, which included ex-Roses members Mani, Nigel Ipinson, Aziz Ibrahim, and Robbie Maddix. Over 300,000 copies of the album were sold.

Brown wrote the lyrics to “Free My Way,” “So Many Soldiers,” and “Set My Baby Free” while imprisoned at Strangeways.After two months, he was released on parole.Polydor Records released his second album, Golden Greats, in 1999. It received critical acclaim and featured more electronic instrumentation.
