Isaac Cooper in Commonwealth Games

Swimming Australia will not take any further disciplinary action against Australian swimmer Isaac Cooper after the 18-year-old was sent home from a training camp in France for misusing prescription medication. Cooper was placed on a plane from Chartres due to “wellbeing challenges, including the use of medication” and was scheduled to return to Australia on Wednesday afternoon, a blow to the Dolphins ahead of next week’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Swimming Australia said in a statement, “He has acknowledged his mistakes and accepted the consequences, and Swimming Australia will continue to support him as he addresses these challenges.”

“Our athletes’ well-being remains our top priority.” Swimming Australia will continue to educate athletes about their obligations under the National Integrity Framework and will provide all necessary support to ensure they uphold the highest standards and behaviours when representing Australia.”

Parallels were quickly drawn between the Stilnox scandal that engulfed the team following the London Olympics, but SA denied that was the substance in question. None of the six swimmers who competed in 2012 are still on the national team.

While those swimmers were later fined and suspended, Cooper will face no further punishment because his absence from the Commonwealth Games was deemed sufficient punishment. When he arrives in Australia, he will be enrolled in SA’s welfare programme.

The Queenslander was expected to win medals in the 50m and 100m backstroke events at the Commonwealth Games, which begin on July 28 in Birmingham. As Mitch Larkin nears the end of his career, he has emerged as the new face of male backstroking in Australia.

Cooper was the Commonwealth’s top-ranked swimmer in both backstroke events, as well as the 50m butterfly and freestyle. At the recent FINA World Championships in Budapest, he finished eighth in the 50m backstroke final.
