Isaac Smith Professional Career

Smith was Hawthorn’s first pick in the 2010 AFL Draft, taking 19th overall. Smith’s path to the AFL was unusual because he had been passed over in the draught the previous year and was thought unlikely to be drafted at the start of 2010. Smith drew attention during the 2011 season for his reliance on speed rather than strength or size in his play.

Smith was a member of the 2013 Hawthorn premiership team and was widely regarded as having a good 2013 season. His performance in the 2013 Grand Final included a spectacular 50m goal in the final quarter. Smith was regarded as an extremely effective midfielder, and was dubbed the “quintessential modern wingman” by pundit Travis King in 2016.Smith drew attention in the 2016 Qualifying Final against traditional rivals Geelong by missing a relatively simple shot on goal after the siren, the scoring of which would have won Hawthorn the game and automatically sent them to the preliminary final.

Following a loss in their Semi-Final match against the Western Bulldogs the following week, Hawthorn was eliminated from the finals series.Smith was the Hawks’ Co-Vice-Captain from 2017 to 2019, but he and Liam Shiels were both replaced by Jack Gunston prior to the 2019 season. Smith remained on Hawthorn’s leadership team. Smith exercised his free agent rights at the end of the 2020 season and moved to Geelong. During Geelong’s grand final victory in 2022, Smith became the oldest player to win the Norm Smith medal for best on ground in an AFL grand final.
