James Bouknight Professional Career
He started his high school Career at Manhattan’s La Salle Academy. As a junior, Bouknight led his team to the New York Federation Class B state championship while averaging 17.4 points per game. He was named the tournament’s most valuable player (MVP), as well as the Class B Player of the Year by the Catholic High School Athletic Association and the New York State Sportswriters Association.
In order to gain more exposure, Bouknight downgraded his class after the season and enrolled at MacDuffie School in Granby, Massachusetts. During his downgraded junior year, Bouknight averaged 19.3 points, five rebounds, and two assists per game before suffering a season-ending torn meniscus in his left knee. Following his recovery, he competed for the PSA Cardinals on the AAU circuit alongside Cole Anthony. As a senior, Bouknight received All-New England Preparatory School Athletic Council AA honors.
Bouknight was given a three-game suspension by UConn on November 7, 2019, for reportedly trying to evade an automobile accident on September 27. On February 9, 2020, Bouknight scored a freshman season-high 23 points in a 72-71 overtime victory over Cincinnati. He had been accused with escaping responsibility, interfering with a police officer, driving too fast for the road conditions, and operating a motor vehicle without a license[10]. He converted the two free throws that won the game for him while scoring 19 points in the second half and overtime.
Following his performance against East Carolina on February 29, Bouknight was awarded the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Player of the Week. As a freshman, he averaged 13 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game and was selected to the Third Team All-AAC and All-Freshman Team.
On December 20, 2020, he scored a career-high 40 points in a 76-74 overtime loss to ninth-ranked Creighton. On January 5, 2021, he suffered an elbow injury against Marquette and missed eight games after having surgery.
As a sophomore, he averaged 18.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, earning First Team All-Big East honors. He was named to the preseason John R. Wooden Award watch list at the start of his sophomore season. On March 31, he announced his intent to skip his remaining college eligibility and enter the 2021 NBA draft.
The Charlotte Hornets selected Bouknight with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. On August 3, 2021, he formally signed with the Hornets. Bouknight made his NBA debut on October 22, 2021, in a 123-112 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, picking up just one rebound in one minute of action. He scored his first NBA points on November 26, 2021, in a 133-115 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, scoring two free throws in four minutes.
