Jeremy Hunt Professional Career

Since 14 October 2022, Jeremy Richard Streynsham Hunt has served as Chancellor of the Exchequer. From 2010 to 2012, he was Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media, and Sport; from 2012 to 2018, he was Secretary of State for Health and Social Care; and from 2018 to 2019, he was Foreign Secretary. He has been the Conservative Party’s Member of Parliament (MP) for South West Surrey since 2005.

Hunt was born in Kennington, the son of a senior Royal Navy officer, and attended Magdalen College, Oxford, where he was President of the Oxford University Conservative Association. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 2005, and he quickly rose through the ranks to become Shadow Minister for Disabled People, and then Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport.

Hunt served as Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media, and Sport in the Coalition Government from 2010 to 2012, where he led the push for local TV, which resulted in Ofcom awarding local TV broadcasting licenses to several cities and towns. Hunt was also in charge of the 2012 London Olympics, which were widely praised. His previous business interests have made him one of parliament’s wealthiest members.

From 2012 to 2018, Hunt was Secretary of State for Health, later Health and Social Care. He served under both the Cameron and May administrations, becoming the longest-serving Health Secretary in British political history on June 3, 2018. During his tenure, he oversaw the implementation of a contentious new junior doctors’ contract in England, following a dispute in which junior doctors staged multiple strikes, the first such strike in 40 years.

Hunt was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in July 2018 after Boris Johnson resigned over the Chequers Agreement. He ran in the Conservative Party leadership election in 2019, finishing second to Johnson with 33.6% of the vote to Johnson’s 66.4%.

Following Johnson’s appointment as Prime Minister, he resigned effective immediately, having declined an invitation to serve as Secretary of State for Defence in Johnson’s first ministry. From 2020 to 2022, he was Chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee, a promotion role due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hunt launched a second Conservative leadership bid after Johnson resigned on July 5, 2022. However, he was defeated in the first ballot round on 13 July after failing to receive the required 30 votes from Conservative MPs, receiving only 18. Liz Truss appointed Hunt as Chancellor of the Exchequer on 14 October 2022, following the dismissal of Kwasi Kwarteng.
