Tarkanian was born in Euclid, Ohio, in 1930, the son of Armenian immigrants. Rose, his mother, was an Armenian genocide survivor. Mickael Tarkanian, Tarkanian’s maternal grandfather, was an Ottoman official who was beheaded by Turkish authorities. The same officials decapitated Mickael’s son as well. Rose and her brothers finally fled the Ottoman Empire, settling in Lebanon, where Rose met George Tarkanian. After marrying, the pair relocated to the United States. Jerry’s father, on the other hand, died when he was 13 years old.

At UNLV, Tarkanian changed the college game by relying on a pressing defence to power the team’s high-octane attack. In his college coaching career, he won almost 700 games, only failing to win 20 games twice and never having a losing season. In 2013, Tarkanian was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Tarkanian earned a bachelor’s degree while playing basketball at Pasadena City College and then Fresno State. He was a high school head coach before moving on to become a successful junior college coach at Riverside City College, where he won three state titles, before returning to Pasadena City College and leading them to a state title. In 1968, he enrolled at Long Beach State College, a four-year institution. Tarkanian created a successful programme around former junior college players, who were often overlooked by other four-year programmes.
He was also one of the few coaches who ventured to form a team with a majority of black players. Before transferring to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, he had a 122–20 record at Long Beach (UNLV). He took a modest programme and turned it into a national force while allowing his players to express themselves freely. Tarkanian became a celebrity in Las Vegas, where he was known for his flamboyant conduct and was lovingly referred to as “Tark the Shark.” He left the Runnin’ Rebels for a brief spell as a professional coach with the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA), before returning to Fresno State to conclude his career.
Throughout his career, he was accused of breaking NCAA rules by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which resulted in penalties for each of his three campuses. Tarkanian answered by challenging the group to look into larger, more powerful universities as well. In 1977, the NCAA ordered UNLV to suspend him, but he sued, and while the case was ongoing, he continued to coach. In 1988, the Supreme Court decided against him, but following a compromise with the NCAA, he was retained as UNLV’s coach. In 1992, Tarkanian sued them again, and the matter was settled in 1998 when he earned $2.5 million.
