Jimmy Akingbola Career

Akingbola began his acting career in Bill Alexander’s The Nativity at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He went on to perform in the Royal National Theatre’s staging of Baby Doll. He then starred opposite Leslie Phillips in playwright John Mortimer’s “Naked Justice” at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

In December 2004, Akingbola played Elvis Presley in the tragic drama Behzti at the Birmingham Rep.In the popular play Prayer Room, he collaborated with rapper and actor Riz Ahmed.Bunce received four-star evaluations for Akingbola’s performance.

Akingbola played his best buddy Marco in the production of Roxanne Silbert’s play People Next Door, in which he provided a noteworthy performance opposite actor Fraser Ayres’ character.

Akingbola won his first award (TMA Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actor) for his performance as Christopher in Blue/Orange, which premiered at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and then toured the country. In Joe Penhall’s award-winning production, directed by Kathy Burke, he starred alongside Roger Lloyd-Pack and Shaun Evans.

Akingbola went on to perform opposite Ian McKellen in Michael Grandage’s The Cut at the Donmar Warehouse.

In July 2008, Akingbola was the first black actor to portray anti-hero Jimmy Porter in the John Osborne play Look Back in Anger at the Jermyn Street Theatre; he was the first black actor to play the role.
