Joel Selwood was born on 26 May 1988 to Bryce and Maree Selwood in the country town of Bendigo, Victoria.Selwood displayed athletic talent from an early age.He was the state hurdling champion from under-10s through to the under-15s, and in one year held every running and jumping record at the Bendigo Sports Centre, except the 100 metres sprint.Selwood attended Catholic College Bendigo. After starting out with St Therese’s Maroon, he played most of his junior football with the Sandhurst Football Club until he was chosen to play for the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup competition throughout 2005.

Joel Anthony Selwood is a Geelong Football Club player in the Australian Football League (AFL). He has four premierships, is a six-time All-Australian, and has served as captain of the All-Australian team three times. Selwood has captained Geelong since 2012, holds the club’s games record, and has three times won the Carji Greeves Medal as Geelong’s best and fairest player.

Selwood, a standout junior track and field athlete and footballer, broke into top-level football early, joining the TAC Cup as a bottom-aged player. As a junior, he won Most Valuable Player awards at the state and international levels, and he was named to the All-Australian and TAC Cup Teams of the Year. Selwood, a potential first-round pick in the 2006 AFL Draft, suffered a serious knee injury during his final year of junior football, dropping him to Geelong’s first pick at seventh overall.

Selwood debuted in the AFL in 2007, earning the AFL Rising Star Award and the AFLPA Best First-Year Player Award. He set a VFL/AFL record with a 92% winning percentage in his first 50 games (46-4) and was a member of three Geelong premiership teams (2007, 2009, and 2011), the last as vice captain. Geelong has made the finals in all but one season since Selwood took over as captain in 2012. They’ve played in seven Preliminary Finals in that time, but have yet to win one. They reached the Grand Final in 2020, but lost to Richmond, before winning against Sydney in 2022.

Throughout most of his career, Selwood has been recognised for his leadership abilities, courage, and consistency. He was named captain at the age of 23, and he has won the AFLPA Best Captain Award. He has won the AFLPA’s Robert Rose Most Courageous Player Award four times. He has appeared in 20 games in every full season of his career and has averaged more than 24 disposals per game, including at least 20 disposals in every full season except his debut.

He received double-digit Brownlow votes for 11 consecutive seasons, including 27 votes as runner-up in 2013. Selwood is skilled at breaking tackles and obtaining free kicks. He also has the most tackles in VFL/AFL history, averaging about five per game.
