Joey DeFrancesco was born in 1971 in Springfield, Pennsylvania.DeFrancesco began playing the organ at the age of 4 and was playing songs by Jimmy Smith verbatim by the time he was 5. His father John began taking him to gigs from the age of 5, letting him sit in on sets.At the age of 10, DeFrancesco joined a band in Philadelphia that included jazz musicians Hank Mobley and Philly Joe Jones.

He was considered a fixture at local jazz clubs, opening shows for Wynton Marsalis and B.B. King.Joey DeFrancesco attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. There he studied music specializing in piano and organ.During his high school years, DeFrancesco won numerous awards, including the Philadelphia Jazz Society McCoy Tyner Scholarship. Joey DeFrancesco signed an exclusive recording contract with Columbia Records when he was 16 years old. The following year, he released his debut album, All of Me. His performance on All of Me is credited with reintroducing the organ to jazz music in the 1980s. =That same year, DeFrancesco went on a five-week European tour with Miles Davis and his band.=He then played keyboard on Davis’ album Amandla, which debuted at No. 1 on the Contemporary Jazz Albums chart in 1989.

DeFrancesco began playing the trumpet around the same time, inspired by Davis’s sound.Davis first noticed DeFrancesco during a performance on the television show Time Out.While performing on the set with high school classmate Christian McBride, Davis inquired of the show’s host, “what’s your organ player’s name?” referring to DeFrancesco.DeFrancesco’s Columbia recording contract included the release of five albums. He also released Where Were You in 1990, Part III in 1991, Reboppin in 1992, and Live at the 5 Spot in 1993, in addition to All of Me.

DeFrancesco began touring with his own quartet when he was 18 years old. In the early 1990s, he began working with John McLaughlin, Miles Davis’ former guitarist and Mahavishnu Orchestra leader. At the age of 22, he co-founded the band The Free Spirits with McLaughlin and drummer Dennis Chambers. He toured with the band for four years and appeared on several albums, including Tokyo Live and After the Rain. On the previous album, DeFrancesco also played trumpet.

In 2004, DeFrancesco was nominated for a Grammy Award for his album Falling in Love Again. DeFrancesco’s career took a slight turn in 2009 with the release of Moonlight Serenade, a film starring Amy Adams and Alec Newman. He played “Frank D” in the film and was also credited as the film’s composer and producer. In 2011, DeFrancesco was nominated for another Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album for Never Can Say Goodbye: Michael Jackson’s Music.

The song was released as a tribute to Michael Jackson in 2010. Other DeFrancesco tribute albums include “Joey DeFrancesco Plays Sinatra His Way,” a tribute to Frank Sinatra, and another to Jimmy Smith. DeFrancesco celebrated his 40th birthday in 2011 by releasing his 29th album, 40, which charted well both domestically and internationally.

Joey DeFrancesco was a four-time Grammy Award nominee who released over 30 albums as a leader. DeFrancesco was a 9-time winner of the Down Beat Critics Poll (organ) and has won the Down Beat Readers Poll every year since 2005, in addition to Grammy nominations in 2004, 2010, and 2020. He also received a number of JazzTimes Awards. DeFrancesco was inducted into the Hammond Hall of Fame in 2013, alongside musicians such as Brian Auger, Billy Preston, Steve Winwood, and his mentor Jimmy Smith.
