John Simon Bercow is a British politician who served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 2009 to 2019, as well as Member of Parliament for Buckingham from 1997 to 2019. Prior to becoming Speaker, he was a Conservative Party member, and he was the first MP elected Speaker without having served as a Deputy Speaker since Selwyn Lloyd in 1971. Bercow left Parliament after resigning as Speaker in 2019 and declining to run for re-election as MP for Buckingham in the general election. He joined the Labour Party in 2021, but was suspended the following year.
From 1986 to 1990, he served as a councillor in the London Borough of Lambeth, and he unsuccessfully ran for Parliament in the 1987 and 1992 general elections before being elected to Buckingham in 1997. In 2001, he was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet, where he served under Iain Duncan Smith and Michael Howard. Bercow resigned in November 2002 due to a disagreement over his support for the Adoption and Children Act 2002, but he returned a year later, only to be ousted from the Shadow Cabinet in 2004. His opinions altered after he was initially closely linked with his party’s right-wing section; by 2009, there were rumours that he may defect to the Labour Party.
Bercow was elected Speaker of the House of Commons following Michael Martin’s resignation in June 2009. He had to leave the Conservative Party as Speaker and run as an independent for the balance of his term. At the beginnings of the Parliaments in 2010, 2015, and 2017, he was re-elected without opposition. This made him the first Speaker to be elected four times since World War II, as well as the first to serve with four Prime Ministers since then. Bercow said in September 2019 that he will resign as Speaker of the House of Commons and MP on October 31, although he remained Speaker until being nominated to the Manor of Northstead on November 4, 2019. Bercow becomes the longest-serving Speaker in the House of Commons since Edward FitzRoy, who held the position for over 15 years between 1928 and 1943.
Bercow was named Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire in 2014, then Chancellor of the University of Essex in July 2017.He joined Royal Holloway, University of London, as a part-time professor of politics in January 2020.Bercow was found to be a chronic bully and liar by an independent Commons complaints commission in 2022, who had sworn at staff and (at one point) made a discriminating comment. If Bercow had still been an MP, the body would have recommended his expulsion, and he should never be allowed access to the Parliamentary estate. Following that, he was suspended from the Labour Party.
