Joshua David Hawley is an American politician and lawyer who has served as Missouri’s junior senator since 2019. Hawley, a Republican, served as Missouri’s 42nd attorney general from 2017 to 2019, before defeating two-term Democratic senator Claire McCaskill in the 2018 election.
Hawley, who was born in Springdale, Arkansas, to a banker and a teacher, attended Stanford University in 2002 and Yale Law School in 2006. He clerked for Tenth Circuit Judge Michael W. McConnell and Chief Justice John Roberts before becoming a lawyer, first in private practise from 2008 to 2011, then for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty from 2011 to 2015. He was also a postgraduate intern at St Paul’s School in London, an associate professor at the University of Missouri School of Law, and a faculty member of the conservative Blackstone Legal Fellowship before becoming Missouri attorney general.
As Missouri attorney general, Hawley launched several high-profile lawsuits and investigations, including one against the Affordable Care Act, one into Missouri governor Eric Greitens, and one into companies linked to the opioid epidemic. Hawley became well-known in the Senate for his criticism of Big Tech, as well as his criticism of the Chinese government and support for an independent Hong Kong. His political views have been described as socially conservative. His ideology has been described by critics as reactionary and theocratic.
In December 2020, Hawley sparked a political backlash by becoming the first senator to announce plans to challenge Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 United States presidential election. Hawley led Senate efforts to overturn the Electoral College vote count and rallied supporters of the Stop the Steal conspiracy theory that motivated an attack on the United States Capitol, prompting figures from across the political spectrum to call for his resignation or expulsion from the Senate. Hawley denied attempting to overturn the election results in late January 2021, and there were no repercussions.
