Edelman was born in Redwood City, California, to Angela and Frank Edelman, who owns A-1 Auto Tech. Jason and Nicole are his siblings. Edelman is of Greek, English, Scottish, Irish, Ashkenazi Jewish, and German descent. His mother was born in Kitchener, Ontario, to German-Belgian parents.

Edelman wasn’t invited to the 2009 NFL Combine. At his March 12 Pro Day, he ran the short shuttle in 3.92 seconds; the top mark at the Combine that year was 3.96 seconds. The New England Patriots held private workouts with Edelman before the 2009 NFL Draft and selected him with the 27th selection of the seventh round , before Michigan State quarterback Brian Hoyer, who joined the Patriots as a free agency. Several analysts felt the Patriots selected Edelman for his Wildcat potential.

On July 16, 2009, Edelman signed a four-year contract with the Patriots that included a $48,700 signing bonus. Edelman subsequently said he realised he lacked the power to create an NFL roster as a quarterback, so he prepared to play other positions before the draught.

During the 2011 season, Edelman was primarily a kick and punt returner. Due to injuries in the Patriots’ secondary, he was rushed into action as a defensive back in Week 10 against the ny Jets.
