Kai Owens Career
Born in China, and adopted by American parents, 17-year-old moguls skier Kai Owens is returning to Beijing to compete for Team USA in the 2022 Winter Olympics where she hopes to win a gold medal in freestyle skiing. VOA’s Adrianna Zhang introduces us to the China-born Olympic skiing phenom. It’s a fitting name for Owens, who at 14 years old became the youngest U.S. skier to ever win a NorAm moguls event.
As of mid-January, Owens is ranked No. 9 in the World Cup moguls rankings, according to the International Ski Federation, so she could have an outside shot at the Olympic podium.
Back in December she had this to say about her journey, via the Associated Press: “Some serious stars aligned for me to be here today. It’s tough as a kid, thinking about being abandoned and left. But I found a great home, a great passion for something that I love and I have a great family. I’m certainly grateful and lucky.”
“It becomes full circle when I step off that plane in China,” Owens told The Associated Press on Friday after the U.S. freestyle skiing team was announced for the Beijing Games that begin next month. “When my skis touch the snow in China, it’s going to be a really special moment for me because I get to ski in the Olympic Games in my birth country. It’s crazy how life works.”
