Hodgkinson became British champion when winning the 800 metres event at the 2020 British Athletics Championships with a time of 2m 3.24s.On 30 January 2021, she set the world under-20 indoor record running 1:59.03 sec in Vienna, which stood for less than a month before being improved upon by Athing Mu with her mark of 1:58.40, making Hodgkinson’s record a European one.
She became European indoor champion when winning the indoor event at the 2021 European Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland in a time of 2:03.88.
On 4 July 2021, the 19-year-old timed 1:57.51 in the 800 m at the Diamond League meet in Stockholm, setting her new personal best, UK U20 and U23 records, and becoming the second fastest European under-20 woman of all time.
Keely Hodgkinson took a sensational silver medal for Great Britain in the women’s 800m at Tokyo 2020 as American Athing Mu won gold in dominant fashion.As the pre-race favourite, the tall and rangy Mu, 19, took the lead early and split in 57.82 seconds after 400m, holding her position at the front and coming home in an American record in 1:55.21.Hodgkinson, also 19, took up a brilliant position with 200m to go and kicked hard off the bend to move from fourth into second and finished strongly to break Kelly Holmes’ British record in 1.55.88.
Hodgkinson opened her indoor season on 19 February, racing 800m with a clear win in 1:57.20 to set the British record, all-comers’ record (best performance on country’s soil), the fastest time anywhere for 20 years, the fastest ever mark by a teenager, and the sixth-fastest mark all time at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix. No woman had run faster indoors since the precise day she was born, when the world record was set. Going into the World Indoor Championships Belgrade 22 in March Hodgkinson was a strong gold medal favorite. However she had to withdrew from the event due to a quad injury.
She opened her summer season on 21 May at the Birmingham Diamond League, winning her specialist event. She then won Eugene DL, Oslo DL and came second in Stockholm DL behind Mary Moraa.Hodgkinson won the silver medal at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon with a season’s best of 1:56.38, finishing behind only Mu in 1:56.30. Moraa in third ran personal best of 1:56.71.
