Professional Career
Sim ran a campaign heavily focused on crime and public safety under the banner of ABC Vancouver, receiving an unprecedented endorsement from the Vancouver Police Union. ABC is now preparing to send its entire slate of seven councillors to City Hall with Sim. With eight votes on council, the party will be able to see any of their policies and proposals passed, even those that require a two-thirds majority.
In addition, the party’s candidates were all elected to the park and school boards, securing solid majorities.”People told us loud and clear that they wanted change, and people, change in Vancouver is here,” Sim said.
A decisive majority will be a significant departure from the previous four years, when Kennedy Stewart, elected as an independent, presided over a council with no majority. Stewart has described the council as “fractured,” and observers have noted that city hall has been marked by close votes, lengthy public hearings, and heated debates since 2018.
Christine Boyle, representing OneCity, and Greens Adrianne Carr and Pete Fry will join the ABC slate on council.ABC has promised to significantly expand the Car 87 program of the Vancouver Police Department. To respond to emergencies where no crime is being committed, a plainclothes officer and a mental health professional are dispatched.
“We’re going to requisition 100 new police officers and 100 new mental health nurses on day one,” he said on Saturday. He has also promised to equip all officers with body cameras by 2025 and to reinstate the School Liaison Program, which places cops in city schools.Sim’s pledge to address the city’s persistent homelessness and housing affordability crises is to dramatically increase construction by shortening permit approval times.
“We will work to make Vancouver the most accessible city in the world,” he said, promising to revitalize the city and boost its reputation by making it more appealing to prospective residents and businesses alike.”We’re going to start working right away to reduce permit times for new homes and businesses.”
