Guthrie attended the PACE Youth Theatre in Paisley and appeared in small roles in television and film. He studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (then the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama). He left after receiving the name part within the National Theatre of Scotland's production of Peter Pan in 2010, graduating later in 2011 with a BA in Acting.
Alongside theatre work, including a task in 2013's Macbeth starring James McAvoy at Trafalgar Studios, Guthrie had a starring role in 2013's opera Sunshine on Leith. Following his conviction for sexual abuse in April 2021Guthrie was dropped by BBC Scotland from his role on Inside Central Station, of which he narrated the primary two seasons. Shows featuring Guthrie were also faraway from the BBC iPlayer.

In September 2020, Guthrie was charged with sexual abuse .A trial before jury was set for January 2021 but was administratively adjourned thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Guthrie remained on bail within the interim. On 16 April 2021, he was convicted following a four-day trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court of completing a sexual abuse on a lady that happened at the residence of fellow actor Scott Reid in Kelvindale, Glasgow between 30 September and 1 October 2017.
The woman, a 29-year-old actress who attended drama school with Guthrie and Reid, had been thanks to meet both men at a bar on the night of the attack but received the residence after Reid received a call from a taxi driver to gather her since she appeared ill.
The woman was placed on a bed, and Reid left the space to phone NHS 24 for assistance, during which era Guthrie kissed, groped, and performed sex acts on her. A forensics expert told the court during the trial that Guthrie's DNA was found inside the woman's underwear. No DNA was found on or inside the adult female body .
Guthrie was unable to state how his DNA was found on the within of the woman's underwear but stated he had physically helped her into the flat raising a suggestion of secondary transfer of evidence. Guthrie was placed on the sex offenders' register and was sentenced to 3 years in prison in May 2021.
